The Idea
David Mensah and Priya Nair, both frustrated with sending money abroad, quit their Bay Street jobs to solve the problem from the inside. SmartCurrency CA incorporated in Ontario.
2019 — Q4
FINTRAC Registration & Seed Round
Secured Money Services Business registration with FINTRAC. Raised $2.4M seed from Canadian fintech angels to build the core platform.
2020 — Q3
Public Launch — 10,000 Users in 30 Days
Launched to the public with CAD→USD, EUR, GBP. Word spread organically — 10,000 Canadians signed up in the first month alone with zero paid advertising.
2021 — Q2
Series A — $18M Raised
Closed a $18M Series A led by a major Canadian venture fund. Expanded to 80+ currencies and launched the mobile app on iOS and Android.
2023 — Q1
100,000 Customers Milestone
Crossed 100,000 active users. Launched Business FX for SMEs importing/exporting from Canada. Partnership with three Schedule I banks for same-day settlement.
